TV commercial casting: the complete guide

Actor en España trabajando en: casting publicidad television

TV advertising is one of the sectors that hires the most actors in Spain every year. Yet very few actors are well prepared to face a commercial casting because they assume it works exactly like a film or theatre casting. It doesn't. Advertising has its own logic, its own timing and its own selection criteria, and understanding them before you walk into the room makes the difference between landing the job or being left out.

Differences between a commercial casting and a film or theatre one

The first difference is the goal. In a film or theatre casting, they look for an actor capable of building a complex character sustained over time. In advertising, they look for a person who embodies an archetype instantly and naturally: the modern mother, the young athlete, the lovable grandfather, the trustworthy executive.

The second difference is the scale of the performance. The camera in advertising works very close to the actors, generally in medium shots and close-ups. Any exaggerated gesture, any overacting, becomes a glaring mistake on camera. Naturalness and authenticity are everything.

The third difference is time. A TV spot lasts between 20 and 45 seconds. That means there is no time for development or nuance. Your impact must be immediate.

Advertising vs dramatic acting: In film, you're a character. In advertising, you're a "type". The difference is that the type in advertising has to be recognisable in two seconds. Train your ability to be immediately readable on camera without losing naturalness. It's a specific skill that you don't pick up on your own.

What commercial casting directors look for

Naturalness on camera

The most valued trait in any commercial casting is the ability to look completely natural in front of a camera. This isn't as simple as it seems: many actors trained in theatre tend to project outward, to amplify gestures and expressions designed to reach the back of the stalls. In advertising, that same energy comes across as fake and forced.

The right physical type for the brief

Brands are very clear about what type of person they want to represent them. This includes specific physical traits (apparent age, build, ethnicity, style), but also something harder to define: the brand's "feel". A luxury brand looks for a different kind of presence than a children's food brand or an insurance company. You can't control whether you fit the brief, but you can make sure you present yourself in the most suitable way possible.

The ability to take and execute directions quickly

Commercial shoots are fast and expensive. Directors need actors who, with a single note, are able to adjust their performance immediately. Demonstrating that ability to listen and adapt at the casting is just as valuable as the performance itself.

How to behave at a commercial casting

  1. Read the brief if they give it to you. Some agencies send information about the brand before the casting. Use that information to understand the tone they're after.
  2. Arrive rested and with a clear mind. Commercial castings are fast, usually lasting between 5 and 15 minutes. You have little time to deliver your best version.
  3. Dress neutrally but neatly. Avoid loud colours, large logos or clothing that distracts. The idea is for them to see you, not your clothes. Unless they ask for a specific look.
  4. Look at the camera when asked. In advertising, a direct connection with the camera is essential. Practise looking into the lens without discomfort or tension.
  5. Smile only when the context calls for it. Many actors smile automatically out of nerves. Control that impulse and react according to the tone of the product.

  • Overacting or "acting" instead of being natural
  • Not listening to the director's notes and carrying on the same way
  • Arriving with a fixed, rigid performance that leaves no room to adjust
  • Talking too much or trying to "sell" too hard in the room
  • Showing nerves on camera (it amplifies them enormously)
  • Neglecting your physical appearance (advertising is highly visual)

How much commercials pay in Spain

Fees in TV advertising in Spain vary enormously depending on the type of campaign, how long your image is used, and whether you're the lead or an extra or background performer. As a rough reference:

  • Background work in a national ad: Between €300 and €600 per shooting day.
  • Supporting role in a national campaign: Between €800 and €2,000 per day plus buyout (image rights for a set period).
  • Lead in a national TV campaign: Between €3,000 and €15,000 or more, depending on the brand and the reach of the campaign.
  • International campaigns: Fees multiply substantially and include renegotiations by country or region.

On top of these fees you have to add image rights (buyout), which compensate the actor for the time during which their image will be used. Advertising contracts can be very complex and it is highly advisable to have an agent or legal advisor before signing.

Agencies specialising in commercial casting in Spain

In Spain there are casting agencies specialising in advertising that work directly for the leading advertising agencies and advertisers. Among the most active are Prodigius Casting, Sandra Manzanares Casting, Laura Otero Casting and Pool de Actores, among others. Keeping your profile up to date on professional platforms makes it easier for these agencies to find you when they're looking for specific profiles.

Pro tip: The advertising sector greatly values actors with experience in improv (improvisation). Commercial castings frequently include situations where they ask you to improvise around the product. Taking improv classes can give you a real edge over other candidates.

TV advertising can be a very significant source of income for an actor, especially early in their career. Beyond the money, shooting a commercial teaches you to work with large technical crews, to perform under pressure and to adjust your acting under demanding conditions. All skills that transfer directly to work in film and series.
