How to write your professional actor bio

Actor writing their professional bio on a laptop for a casting profile

Your actor profile bio is the first thing a casting director reads when they land on your page. In under 30 seconds they decide whether you remain a candidate or they move on. With a well-written bio you can make the difference even if you have less experience than other actors on the list.

The most common mistake: the bio as a CV

Most actors write their bio like a standard office CV: list of qualifications, list of productions, list of awards. The problem is that this doesn't communicate who you are as an artist. A casting director doesn't want to know what you've done but who you are and what you can bring to their production.

A professional bio is not a list. It's a text that presents your artistic offer in a clear and memorable way.

The structure that works: 3 paragraphs

Paragraph 1: Who you are and what kind of actor you are (2–3 sentences)

Start with your name, your main speciality and what defines you as a performer. Don't try to cover everything. Be specific.

Example: "Lucía Martínez is an actress based in Madrid, specialising in contemporary drama and streaming series. She has spent five years developing emotionally complex characters in independent theatre and national audiovisual productions."

Paragraph 2: Your most relevant experience (3–4 sentences)

Don't list everything. Choose the 2–3 projects most relevant to the kind of work you're seeking and describe them briefly with context. A title without context says little; a title with context says a great deal.

Example: "She led Shadows in the Courtyard (Teatro Lara, Madrid, 2025 season), which received the Best Show Award from the Theatre Directors' Association. In film, she appeared in the short Before the Sea (Official Selection, Málaga Film Festival 2024), playing a young woman with social anxiety disorder."

Paragraph 3: Training and relevant skills (2–3 sentences)

Specific training, languages, physical or technical skills relevant to the kind of work you're looking for.

Example: "Trained at Studio Corazza in Madrid (Stanislavski and Meisner method). Speaks English at C1 level and conversational French. Has training in classical singing and contemporary dance."

Ideal length: Between 120 and 200 words. A bio that is too short seems underworked. One that is too long won't be read in full. The sweet spot is around 150 words.

What to include in your bio

  • The city where you work (essential for casting directors searching by location).
  • Main speciality (film, theatre, commercials, voiceover/dubbing, TV series...).
  • 2–3 projects with title, context and your role in them.
  • Relevant training (especially from recognised schools).
  • Languages and level.
  • Relevant special skills (singing, dance, acrobatics, sports, instruments...).

What NOT to include in your bio

  • Your age or date of birth. Directors see your photo. Age in text adds nothing and can work against you.
  • Generic phrases like "passionate about acting". Every actor is passionate. It doesn't differentiate.
  • Irrelevant projects or ones from more than 10 years ago. The more recent the better.
  • Non-professional personal information (hobbies, relationship status, personal interests...).
  • Excessive self-praise: "The best actress of her generation." No. Let the work speak for itself.

Tone: third person or first person

For professional profiles on casting platforms, third person works better. It sounds more objective and professional: "María García is an actress..." rather than "I am an actress...".

For your personal website or social media, first person creates more connection. Adapt the tone to the channel.

Update your bio every 6 months

A bio with projects from 3 years ago gives the impression of inactivity. Each time you finish a relevant project, update your bio. Directors value active actors who keep working and training.
