Spanish cinema is going through a moment of international expansion. Platforms such as Netflix, HBO Max, Amazon Prime and Apple TV+ have significantly increased their production in Spain, which widens the number of projects and opportunities for local actors. Yet access to these castings is far from obvious. This guide explains how the casting process works in Spanish cinema and how to position yourself to break into it.
How film casting works in Spain
The film casting process in Spain generally follows these stages:
- The director or production company hires a casting director. They are not the same person: the film director delegates the search process to a specialist.
- The casting director builds out profiles. Based on the script, they define the physical, range and experience characteristics of each character.
- First search. The casting director reviews their database of known actors and platforms such as Arga Studios, IMDb, or contacts agencies directly.
- First auditions (self-tapes or call-ins). Shortlisted actors record a self-tape or attend an in-person audition with scenes from the script.
- Feedback to the director. The casting director presents a selection to the director and producer.
- Chemistry read. For lead roles or those with a lot of interaction, paired auditions are held with other already-confirmed actors.
- Confirmation and contract.
Where to find film castings in Spain in 2026
Film casting calls are rarely posted on open channels. Most of the work happens through professional networks. So you will get access to them if:
- Your profile is on professional platforms (Arga Studios, Mandy, Backstage) that casting directors actively consult.
- You have representation (an agent or manager) who receives private calls from casting directors.
- You have a direct relationship with casting directors thanks to having met them on previous projects or at industry events.
- You follow casting directors and production companies on social media, some of whom post open calls on Instagram or Twitter for specific profiles.
Netflix and HBO in Spain: Major-platform productions rarely publish open calls. They work exclusively with prestigious casting directors who manage the process confidentially. The most direct way in is to have a talent agency with relationships at that level.

Scale of the performance
Film works with much tighter shots than theatre. The camera amplifies everything: micro-gestures, glances, breathing. What is subtle on stage is visible on screen. What is expressive on stage can look exaggerated on screen. The general rule: less is more.
Preparation time
On television, actors often learn their lines with very little time. Film usually offers more preparation. Make the most of it: the film director wants you to know the character deeply.
Number of takes and variation
Film shoots more takes and the director may ask you for variations: "the same scene but more restrained", "try it without saying that last line". Technical and interpretive flexibility is essential.
How to prepare a self-tape for a film casting
The self-tape (a video-recorded audition) is the main shortlisting tool in today's film casting. To make it effective:
- Read and analyse the scenes thoroughly. Understand what the character wants in that scene, what the subtext is and what the given circumstances are.
- Record in a clean space, free of distracting objects. A neutral background or one with a blurred depth of field.
- Natural lighting or a basic three-point setup. The face must be clearly visible.
- Camera at eye level, never from below (it makes the face larger and the nose more prominent) nor from above (it makes the character look submissive).
- Record at least 3 takes and choose the one with the greatest authenticity, not necessarily the most "perfect" one.
- Follow the casting's exact instructions. If they ask for two scenes, do not submit three. If they ask for a medium shot, do not submit an extreme close-up.
The state of Spanish cinema in 2026: sectors with the most opportunities
To guide your search, these are the sectors with the highest active production:
- Thrillers and dramas for platforms. Netflix and Prime Video Spain keep producing at a high pace in this genre.
- Spanish romantic comedies. They have experienced a revival both in cinema and on platforms.
- Auteur cinema and festivals. Emerging directors look for actors on open platforms and within the community. International exposure from Berlin, San Sebastián, Cannes.
- European and Latin American co-productions. They require bilingual actors or actors with a neutral accent.
- Cinematic advertising. Premium brands produce spots with film-level budget and quality. Very accessible through specialised casting directors.
Auteur cinema vs commercial cinema: Don't treat them as mutually exclusive options. A short film at Sundance or San Sebastián can give you more international visibility than 5 episodes of a filler series. Diversify your strategy: combine commercial projects for financial continuity with artistic projects to build your career profile.
