But dubbing and voice-over are distinct disciplines, with different techniques, markets and career paths. This guide explains everything you need to know.
What is dubbing?
Dubbing consists of replacing an original actor's voice (usually in another language) with the dubbing actor's voice, synchronizing the audio perfectly with the character's lip movements on screen. It is a technically demanding discipline that requires:
- Exact lip synchronization (lipsync).
- An emotional register equivalent to the original actor's.
- Reading speed adapted to the pace of the video.
- The ability to work quickly under pressure (dubbing sessions are intense).
Dubbing is mainly applied to films, series, animation and video games.
What is voice-over?
Voice-over is a narration or voice recording that accompanies audiovisual content without the need for lip synchronization. The voice-over actor reads a script with a particular tone and rhythm, but is not replacing any mouth on screen.
It is used in:
- Advertising (TV, radio and digital commercials).
- Documentaries (narration).
- Audiobooks.
- E-learning and corporate training.

An experienced dubbing actor can bill between €3,000 and €8,000 a month working regularly. Image rights and re-editions also add long-term income.
However, voice-over for advertising can be extremely lucrative for voices that work a lot in that segment. A recording for a national campaign can pay between €800 and €3,000 in a single session, plus royalties if the campaign has wide reach.
The reality of the industry: Breaking into dubbing in Spain is hard. The community is small and very close-knit. The entry auditions at studios like SDI Media or Tecnison are demanding. Most actors working in dubbing have 2-4 years of specialized training.
How to start in dubbing
- Specialized training. Look for dubbing courses in Madrid or Barcelona. Schools like CEV, ESAD or specialized private studios offer technical training. You will learn lipsync, microphone technique and teleprompter reading.
- Dubbing demo. Once trained, record a 1-2 minute demo with scenes from different genres. This demo is your calling card.
- Contacting studios. The major dubbing studios in Madrid (SDI Media, Tecnison, Megamedia, Dinamica) don't usually hire directly but through dubbing directors who know the actors. Attending open auditions and networking is essential.
- The union. If you land dubbing work on a regular basis, consider joining the Dubbing Actors' Union Section of the SAE.
How to start in voice-over
- Basic equipment. For freelance voice-over you need a condenser microphone (from €80), an audio interface (from €60) and a treated space (a wardrobe full of clothes works at home).
- Voice-over demo. Record demos in different registers: corporate, advertising, narration, e-learning. Include 3-4 clips of 20-30 seconds each.
- Freelance platforms. Sign up on platforms like Voice123, Voices.com or Backstage to start landing international projects.
- Voice agencies. In Spain there are agencies specialized in advertising and corporate voice work. A strong portfolio can open those doors for you.
